” BLACK DON’T CRACK – CLICHE OR THE TRUTH? “

I have been a skincare advocate for many years now and I proud myself in using the right products. A question I get all the time is which products are better? Store bought or natural and made at home? The truth of the matter is that it does not matter, use products that are right for your Black skin. Personally when I buy or make skincare products I focus on two things – hydration and all year skin glow. Over the years on my skincare journey I have learnt that certain ingredients work well for Black skin. Some of those are fatty acids and vitamins which help with moisturise. But another reason why one may want to know how to choose the right skincare products for Black skin could be the common problem among those with melanin rich skin, which is hyper-pigmentation . When choosing the skincare products for Black skin I recommend essential skincare ingredients that will give melanin rich skin answers to their skin needs. Below are six of my go to list. 1. Choose skincare products with antioxidants. What does that mean? Antioxidants protect your skin from free radicals we are exposed to on daily basis. 2. Go for Vitamin C infused products also known as L-ascorbic acid which stimulates collagen production and fights UV damage and pigmentation. 3. Use SPF for darker skin tones. Don’t believe on the tales that Black people do not need SPF. Use at least 30 factor. 4. Skin brighteners which come in form of serums and are also know for treating hyper-pigmentation and even out skin tone. 5.Retinol for dark skin which comes from Vitamin A and great in helping with acne. The best way into introducing retinol into your skin is by starting with low dozes as it can irritate your skin more. 6. Hyaluronic Acid which functions as a great moisturiser making your skin look fresh and hydrated.
